Tools to Help With Pronunciation/ Language Recognition/Language Acquisition

  • Howjsay

    • Very simple to use
    • Student types in word they need pronounced and they will hear the word
    • The word will also come up in a new box; from there is the option to get definition and/or translation of the word

  • Word Hippo

    • Looks elementary but probably more useful for upper elementary through adult
    • This is a multipurpose tool; pronounce words, get meaning, find rhyming words, translate the word, see it in a sentence, find synonyms, etc.

  • Duolingo

    • Free site for language acquisition
    • Many languages to choose from
    • You select the language you speak and it will give you options tailored to you
    • iOS and Android app available
    • Uses gamification to increase engagement
    • Claims to be as good as "university-level language learning"
      • I use this one in my English Language Acquisition class
      • Kids love it, its easy to use, and I can track their weekly progress

  • Pronunciator

    • Learn 80 different languages
    • Web based or app
    • Will help with language acquisition and pronunciation of language
    • Requires a log-in to use most features (contact your local library, many subscribe and you can use your library card to sign up)

Text - to - Speech Tools

  • Natural Reader

    • Free text-to-speech; copy and paste directly to website, change the speed of the voice if necessary
    • Free download available
    • More natural sounding voices
    • Paid versions with many more features such as conversion to mp3


  • Chrome Speak & Announcify

    • Note: the links are for the Chrome Web Store - these are Google app
    • Chrome Speak is as simple as selecting the text and right-clicking; works on long pieces of text; offline for quicker functioning
    • Announcify reads any webpage you are on
